Garden help May 21 & 22

Hello All,

Since it was just me in the garden today, not much got accomplished. So, we have to have another big work day next weekend. We really need to work together to get the community plot going. Here's the plan:

 

Patrick (my boyfriend) is going to till the plots again today - I tried using Lu's awesome antique push tiller, but it was a little much for me (thanks anyway Lu!)

Jack (my son) is going to mow and weed whack today

I'll be going back to the garden tonight to get the hose system set up and turn on the water. I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to set up the hose system, but I'll send an email later once I have figured it out.

Make the paver paths for the wheelchairs. We'll have a group from OSU helping with this, but that doesn't mean we don't need more hands! We need as many hands and levels as possible. If anyone has a level we can use, please let me know and I'll pick it up this week. I'm going to work with Home Depot to get the edging material and the sand we need for this project.

RPAC Upper Gym to Close May 12

The floor in the RPAC Upper Gym will undergo repairs starting May 12 for four weeks. Open recreation space for indoor volleyball will be held at the Adventure Recreation Center. Please see the Open Recreation Schedule for changes at http://recsports.osu.edu/activities/open-recreation

 

Intramural Chess Tournament
Checkmate! Enter the intramural chess tournament, featuring 20-minute timed games, on Sunday, May 22, 2011, from 4 - 8 p.m. at the RPAC. There is no fee to enter. Register at the Intramural Office in RPAC B147 (behind Juice 2) by May 20.

 

OAC Canoeing Trip

Register for a canoeing adventure that offers beautiful views of the lakes, cliffs, and canyons by registering for the Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC) trip to Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota June 10-18. The fee is $350 and covers transportation, equipment, food, lodging, and instruction. Register by May 27 at the OAC. Space is limited!

 

Magic School Bucks for Ages 3 and 4

Summer Rec Sports Memberships

Stay in shape this summer! Spring quarter memberships expire on Sunday, June 19. Summer memberships are available to purchase beginning May 1, even if you aren't enrolled in classes or are enrolled in less than four credit hours this summer. Any student currently enrolled for spring 2011 can purchase a summer membership for the quarterly rate of $82. Semester students summer dates run May 15 - August 20, while quarter students summer dates are June 12 - September 20. Visit the RPAC Welcome Center or the front desk at the Adventure Recreation Center (ARC) for assistance.

 

Swim Lessons Just in Time for Summer
Community Programs is offering an end of spring two-week Learn-to-Swim program to help your child become more comfortable in the water before summer fun! This session will meet Monday through Thursday for two weeks during the weeks of June 6-9 and June 13-16.  Class levels range from parent/child up to Learn-to-Swim level 3, including all levels of preschool aquatics.  Registration is open from May 2 through June 1 and spots are limited so register soon! WITS Personal Training Certification Class for Summer

Want to become a personal trainer? Registration is now open for the World Instructors Training Schools (WITS) Personal Training Certification class for summer beginning Saturday, June 18, at 9 a.m. in the RPAC. Cleveland: Thousands turn to RTA due to gas prices

CLEVELAND -- High gas prices have thousands of Northeast Ohioans leaving their cars at home and taking the bus or the train.

The Greater Cleveland RTA reports ridership up at least 5 percent recently. And those figures were calculated before gasoline hit $4 per gallon.

"We are now averaging between 165,000 and 170,000 individual riders per day," says RTA's Mary McCahon. She said the numbers should continue to grow as the price of gasoline stays at or near present levels.

Garden Meeting and Work Day

Hello Gardeners!
Tomorrow evening (Wednesday, May 11th) at 6:30pm we will have a garden meeting in the lobby of Creative Living at 1531 Perry Street. We will be discussing the layout of the planting for the community plot, creating signs for the compost system and discussing the watering schedule for the community plot. Please join us!

Thanks to the hard work of Creative Living Gardener Patti Ruble, we received a $25 donation from Oakland Nursery and a $100 donation from Home Depot in Dublin. From Oakland Nursery, I purchased seeds for many, many direct sow flowers, vegetables and herbs, to be planted THIS Saturday. From Home Depot, we will be purchasing a wheel to house the hose, a new hose nozzle, and ?? other things to be determined. THANK YOU PATTI!!!!

I've only received one gardener registration form so far - please get those to me as soon as you can, either by mail or in person. Ohio State's legal department is asking me for the Release of Liability forms - we MUST provide them before people start gardening. All gardeners - even those not choosing an individual plot, need to complete the registration form and the Release of Liability form.

This Saturday, May 16th from 10am to noon is the community plot planting party. If the current forecast of overcast with random sprinkles holds up, it will be a perfect day for planting. Please join me!  If the rain is really coming down, however, we will do it on May 21st. Planting in very wet soil promotes root rot - and we don't want that!

After Gov. Rick Scott of Florida thoughtlessly rejected $2.4 billion in federal aid for a high-speed rail line, he claimed last month that he was doing a huge favor for the national Treasury, which he expected would give away the money in tax cuts. That was nonsense, of course; Mr. Scott was really doing a favor for train passengers in the Northeast, Midwest and California, which were given $2 billion of his money on Monday for better service. 

Florida voters might want to think about that decision as they sit in traffic jams, burning up $4-a-gallon gasoline. In fact, some of them clearly have thought about it because Mr. Scott now has some of the worst approval ratings of a Florida official in the last decade. 

He has joined other newly elected Republican governors so rigidly opposed to the Obama administration that they are willing to harm their states to score points. The result is a crazy quilt of state relationships with Washington, stitched more with ideology than reason.

The Ohio Department of Transportation has erased talk of an "integrated network" of roads, rails and other modes of travel in the Kasich administration's first rewrite of policies that guide state-funding decisions.

A 34-page proposal released yesterday for the group that prioritizes transportation projects across Ohio instead would emphasize those with economic-development potential and funding that's already lined up by local governments.

"It's not necessarily out," ODOT spokesman David Rose said of rail and bus and other non-highway projects embraced by Republican Gov. John Kasich's predecessor, Democrat Ted Strickland.
