The City Council is currently complying with a public records request that impacts Council’s e-mail data base.  On January 31, 2012, the Communications office was asked for all e-mails addresses, including names and other information contained within the file, used when Council distributes news releases and other information to the public.  After consulting with the City Attorney’s office, the Department of Technology is assisting Council in fulfilling this request.

Capital Budget Priorities

WHAT:

Columbus City Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson, chair of the Finance Committee, will hold a public hearing to discuss the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) being considered by City Council.  The CIP serves as a five year blueprint for capital spending.  Recognizing that individual neighborhoods may have specialized needs that may or may not already be addressed in the CIP, Councilmember Tyson is inviting residents and business owners to this hearing to discuss how the CIP can best be used to improve neighborhoods.   Speaker slips will be available on the day of the hearing beginning at 8 am at City Hall.   General rules of speaking before Council will apply.  Speaker slips will be accepted until 5:30 pm.  The meeting will be televised live on CTV, Columbus’ public access station on local cable systems.

Just a reminder about upcoming Rec Sports events this weekend:

 

·         The ZUMBA® Class for a Cause, with all proceeds benefiting Nationwide Children’s Hospital, is this Saturday, February 11, at 5:30 p.m. in the RPAC South Gym. Admission is $5. 

 

·         Don't have plans for Valentine's Day yet? You have until Wednesday to purchase tickets for the Valentine's Ball on Saturday from 7 – 11 p.m. in the Ohio Union. The ticket price ($10 each for graduate/professional students; $15 per ticket for faculty/staff) includes two drink tickets, full dinner and dessert, dancing, entertainment, and free on-site childcare. Purchase your tickets through D-TIX at the Ohio Union.

 

·         Thanks to everyone who responded about the tickets for the Arnold Classic tickets from last week’s Member Update. All tickets have been distributed.

TYSON recognizing BLACK HISTORY Month: Columbus City Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson is sponsoring resolution 0031X-2012 to recognize and celebrate Black History Month in Columbus and honor the Tuskegee Airmen and the work of the Ohio memorial Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc.  The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African‑American pilots in the United States military who overcame segregation and prejudice and became one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II.  The Ohio Memorial Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. provides scholarships to young people interested in aviation and continues to keep the legacy of the famed Tuskegee Airmen alive.  Black History Month has been celebrated annually since 1976 and provides an opportunity for all the residents to reflect on how far our city, state, and nation have come in ensuring equality and fairness for all people.

 

CONTINUING THE redevelopment of the former Columbus Coated Fabrics site: The city of Columbus continues its promise to assist in the redevelopment the former Columbus Coated Fabrics site in the Weinland Park Neighborhood with housing, green space and improved roadways.  Development Committee Chair Zach M. Klein is sponsoring ordinance 0205-2012 to authorize two Tax Increment Financing (TIF) agreements between the city and Wagenbrenner Development Inc. for the construction and financing of improvements within and around the tax increment financing areas to help create a more desirable area for prospective home and business owners.

 

Mills Protecting victims of domestic violence:  Public Safety & Judiciary Committee Chair Michelle M. Mills is sponsoring legislation to help witnesses and victims of domestic violence through legal assistance, counseling, referrals, and connection to other agencies and community resources.  Ordinance 0097-2012 will authorize the appropriation of matching funds in the amount of $35,667.00 for the 2012 VAWA Domestic Violence Prosecutor Grant for the continued funding of the Domestic Violence Prosecutors program.  The city was awarded $107,000 in grant funding from the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, Office of Homeland Security and Justice Program, which required matching funds from the city.

Rec Sports To Celebrate John Glenn’s 50^th Anniversary of Friendship 7 Flight
The Ohio State University community, including Rec Sports, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of John Glenn's historic flight aboard Friendship 7 this February by offering a variety of events, including Pre-Valentine’s Ball Dance Classes; fitness assessments; the Friendship 7 Indoor Triathlon; the John Glenn Family Space Experience; and free selected group fitness classes. Free Kettlebell Clinics
Looking for a way to get in shape for spring break? Attend kettlebell workout clinics at Rec Sports! Each session is held in RPAC B20 and is led by a certified instructor. Clinics take place Tuesday, February 7, from 3:15 – 4:30 p.m., and Thursday, February 23, from 4 – 5:15 p.m.

Personal Training Certification
Interested in becoming a personal trainer? The World Instructors Training School (WITS) Personal Training Certification course begins Saturday, March 24, at 9 a.m. in the RPAC. The course is $589 for all Recreational Sports members and $674 for non-members. Register by calling (614) 292-7671. 

2012 Arnold Sports Expo Tickets Available
The 2012 Arnold Sports Festival has donated a limited number of tickets to Rec Sports to give to members! If you are interested, please contact Kris Myers. Tickets are first come, first serve.

The festival, featuring the 24th Annual Arnold Classic, will be held March 1 - 4, 2012 in downtown Columbus and will again feature more than 18,000 athletes competing in 45 sports and events, including 11 Olympic Sports. Events will include professional and amateur men's and women's bodybuilding, fitness, figure and bikini; professional and amateur strongman; gymnastics, martial arts, cheerleading, dance sport, fencing, cheerleading, and many, many more. The 700-booth Arnold Fitness EXPO will offer the latest trends in fitness equipment, apparel, nutritional supplements, and non-stop entertainment on the Arnold Fitness EXPO Stage. Jesse Owens North Lockers Relocated
The day use lockers at Jesse Owens North (JON) have been relocated to the east wall adjacent to the water fountain in the main space. Please use the new location for your storage needs. 

Intramural Pickleball, Arm Wrestling Tournaments to be Held
There’s still time to participate in upcoming intramural small tournaments. Pickleball will be held Sunday, February 12, with arm wrestling taking place Sunday, February 19. The registration deadline is the Thursday before the tournament in the Intramural Sports Office. Registration costs $5, and the first 40 to sign up receive a free T-shirt!

SPDA 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament
Compete in the Second Annual Student Professional Development Association (SPDA) 3-on-3 Tournament February 11, 2012, in the RPAC South Gym. Team entry fees are $30 and a cash prize will be awarded to the finalists in the men's and women's brackets. Register at the RPAC Welcome Center.
