Take Your Child to Work Day is April 12 CCS students are encouraged to participate in "Take Your Child to Work Day" on April 12, 2012. This differs from the national observation of "Take Your Child to Work Day" scheduled for April 26. The national observance falls during the district's designated week for the administration of the Ohio Achievement Assessments.  The alternate date, set during our Spring Break, allows students the opportunity to visit their parent/guardian's work site, as well as alleviate any unnecessary disruptions to the instructional school day.  Please note, no visitors or student visits will be permitted at any CCS elementary or middle school on April 26 due to the required test administration. Woodward Park Middle School Students Headed for West Point The Woodward Park MS STEM Club advanced to the final round of the 2012 West Point Bridge Design contest. The final round of competition will be held at West Point, NY, on May 4. More than 21,000 bridge designs were entered by 7,500 teams in the competition. The top bridge design winners receive a $10,000 scholarship. All finalists in the competition get a free Notebook computer. Columbus Global Academy Earns FBI Award Columbus Global Academy has been named as the recipient of the 2011 FBI Director's Community Leadership Award. Principal Kimberly Normand accepted the Director's Community Leadership Award from Edward J. Hanko, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Cincinnati Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), on behalf of the school. Fort Hayes Arts & Academics HS Wins Grammy The Grammy Foundation recently announced that Fort Hayes Arts & Academic High School won one of 18 grants given to the top public high schools in the country for music excellence. Fort Hayes Career Students Advance to National Competition Fifteen members of the Fort Hayes Career Center Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) team placed in the State HOSA competition at Tolles Career and Technical Center in Plain City last week. They will advance to the National HOSA competition in Orlando, Florida, in June. Congratulations!   Robotics Team Among the Best in the State A robotics team consisting of students from the Fort Hayes Career Center, East High School and Columbus Alternative High School placed sixth in the statewide robotics competition held recently in Cleveland. Led by Joseph Rader, they competed against 64 teams. Kudos!! National Children's Day Community Festival - April 28 Columbus City Schools will host National Children's Day festivities, Saturday April 28 at five schools across the district. The entire community is invited to join us at one of the five regional locations. The FREE National Children's Day Community Festival is a fun, volunteer driven event. Each region will host entertaining activities, artistic displays, games, and student performances, as well as share the wide range of challenging and innovative academic programs and services the district offers. Transportation Director Earns Award of Excellence The Ohio Association for Pupil Transportation recently gave Columbus City Schools Transportation Director Steve Simmons the William Rice Transportation Supervisor Award of Excellence. This award recognizes supervisors who exhibit outstanding leadership and professional conduct in the school transportation field and who have contributed to the advancement of transportation supervision as a profession.

New Citywide Residential Recycling is Coming Soon!
Convenient and easy at no additional cost to residents

Recycling is coming to Columbus. The new service is being rolled out to all residents living in single-family homes or in buildings with four units or less that are not part of a complex. The rollout takes place in five phases starting this spring and ending early 2013. Recycled items will be collected every other week, alternating with yard waste collection.

West, Southwest and Northwest Neighborhoods First to Start Recycling
Between April 16 and May 19, the city will deliver a blue recycling cart to every eligible household in phase one neighborhoods. (See map below.) When the cart arrives at curbside, that's just the beginning. Residents should follow these easy steps.

1. Look inside for important information on what to recycle and collection dates.
2. Store the cart where it can easily be filled with recyclables.
3. Write the home address on the cart with a permanent marker.
4. Fill it up with recyclables - no sorting necessary.

Carts should be placed in the same spot as the trash container for collection. Monday, June 4 is the first day for West, Southwest and Northwest neighborhoods' service.

PROVIDING CURBSIDE RECYCLING FOR COLUMBUS RESIDENTS: The city of Columbus will begin implementing the first phase of RecyColumbus, a citywide residential recycling program later this month.  More than 50,000 homes on the west, southwest and parts of the northwest sides will be receiving 64 gallon blue recycling carts between April 16 and May 19, with collection service to begin June 4. Public Service Committee Chair Eileen Y. Paley is sponsoring ordinance 0619-2012 to authorize the expenditure of $5.3 million for the purchase and delivery of 64 gallon recycling containers and container parts for the Division of Refuse.  Recycling will be collected on a bi-weekly schedule with yard waste to be collected on the alternate week.  RecyColumbus will provide curbside recycling to more than 227,000 households by the time the program is fully implemented in February 2013.

 

Supporting HI-tech COMPANIES:  City Council is scheduled to continue supporting one of Columbus’ best assets in TechColumbus, an internationally acclaimed small business incubator.  Created as a non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of high tech firms, TechColumbus helps provide the infrastructure and other support services businesses need in their incipient stages.  Ordinance 0641-2012, sponsored by Small & Minority Business Development Committee Chair A. Troy Miller, will authorize the expenditure of $500,000 from the General Fund for the Entrepreneurial Signature Program, a key component in TechColumbus' business development effort to attract and grow new high-technology businesses.  This allocation represents City Council’s continued financial commitment to help TechColumbus secure $15 million in state grants.

 

CITY COLLECTION COSTS: The Columbus City Attorney’s Claims Division contracts with two outside firms with experience in governmental accounts receivables to help collect outstanding debt owed to the City.  Public Safety & Judiciary Committee Chair Michelle M. Mills is sponsoring ordinance 0642-2012 to authorize the City Attorney to renew a contract with Linebarger, Goggan, Blair & Sampson LLP and Capital Recovery Systems, Inc. for the collection of delinquent accounts, court costs and reimbursement of over payments.  The legislation will also authorize the appropriation of $760,000.00 from the Collection Fees fund.  This fund is generated by fees collected by collection agents and used to pay the associated collection costs due.  Since 2009, a 30% fee is now added to the total debt collected to all accounts without payment plans in place.  This allows the City to recover 100% of the debts collected and the debtor pays the additional 30% collection fee to the collection agency.  The contract will run through March 31, 2013. 

 

CONTINUING TO ATTRACT YOUNG PROFESSIONALS TO THE COLUMBUS WORKFORCE:  In 2006, the City of Columbus and the Columbus Chamber developed the Young Professionals Initiative, an economic development strategy designed to attract and retain young professionals to our area.  Project research was completed and an action plan was approved.  Implementation of the successful program is ongoing.  Ordinance 0636-2012, sponsored by Development Committee Chair Zach M. Klein, authorizes the expenditure of $70,000 from the General Fund to continue support the Young Professional Initiative.  The money will be used to continue employment of a manager who is responsible for the attraction and retention initiative.   

 

ENSURING CITY BUILDINGS ARE SAFE: City facilities are utilized by Columbus residents, business professionals and employees every day.   Each year, buildings are inspected to ensure fire safety.  Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson, chair of the Finance Committee, is sponsoring ordinance 0555-2012 to authorize the expenditure of $170,000 for a contract renewal with S.A. Comunale Company, Inc. for annual smoke and fire alarm testing, inspection and repair, fire pump testing, and fire suppression inspection for all City-owned facilities.

Columbus Museum of Art Event Friday, March 30
Students, faculty and staff, along with their families and friends, are invited to kick off the spring quarter at the annual Columbus Museum of Art event, on Friday, March 30, from 7 – 11 p.m. Admission is free with a BuckID or other university ID. Guests can enjoy all of the art galleries, along with light refreshments, musical entertainment and more.
