I wanted to remind you that we are collecting toys for the Toys for Tots Foundation this year.  If you would like to help out, drop off any new, unwrapped toy at the RPAC Welcome Center  this week through Thursday, December 1.  Our goal is to collect 1,800 new toys!

(Columbus)—Columbus City Councilmembers are holding a series of public hearings to discuss Mayor Coleman’s 2012 proposed budget.  Unless otherwise noted, public testimony will be accepted at all hearings.  Speaker slips can be filled out the day of the hearing and general rules regarding speaking before Council will apply.  The meetings will be broadcast live on CTV, Columbus’ government television channel 3 on local cable systems.  All dates and times are subject to change.

Councilmember Eileen Y. Paley, chair of the Public Service and Transportation Committee, will hold a public hearing on a proposal to begin a City supported curb side recycling program.   Public testimony will be accepted and the meeting that will be broadcast live on CTV, Columbus’ government television channel 3 on local cable systems.  Speaker slips are available at Columbus City Hall beginning at 8 am the morning of the hearing and will be accepted until 5:15 pm in Council Chambers. Thanksgiving Holiday Hours
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the hours of your favorite Rec Sports facilities will change. Visit each facility page at http://recsports.osu.edu to see the hours.

 

Family hours will be held at the following facilities:
Thursday, November 24: ARC, 1 – 5 p.m.

Friday, November 25: ARC, 1 – 5 p.m.; RPAC, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Saturday, November 26: ARC, 1 - 5 p.m.; RPAC 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Toys for Tots with Rec Sports
Join Rec Sports in helping children this holiday season! Donate any new, unwrapped toy at the RPAC Welcome Center November 28 - December 1 for the Marines Toys for Tots Foundation. The goal is to collect 1,800 new toys. On Thursday, December 1, at 6 p.m., in the RPAC Amphitheatre, there will be a celebration event for anyone that donated a toy.

 

Family Service Night
Give back this holiday season and join Rec Sports's Community Programs in the RPAC Amphitheater on December 2 anytime between 6 and 8 p.m. for a night of service.

Families can enjoy holiday snacks while working together to create a banner for a local nursing home, write letters to our troops, and wrap gifts to be donated to a local school. Pre-registration is not required. 

Get Your Holiday Shopping Done with the Help of Drop (Off) and Shop
Let us entertain your children while you get your holiday shopping done! On December 4, between 1 and 5 p.m., Rec Sports's Community Programs will host its Drop and Shop Camp at the RPAC.

Drop-off and pick-up for this camp is flexible, but parents should still register their campers through the web site or in person at the Community Programs Office in the RPAC. Tennis Center Winter Quarterly Reservation

A new fitness floor will be installed at Jesse Owens South on December 12-16  he building will be closed at this time.

From December 10 – 18, the Outdoor Adventure Center will be closed while the wall is refurbished.

KEEPING DOWNTOWN SAFE FROM HAZARDOUS MATERIALS: Councilmember Michelle M. Mills, chair of the Public Safety & Judiciary Committee is sponsoring ordinance 1864-2011 to amend Sections 2551.06 and 2551.08 of the Columbus City Codes, to provide the Columbus Division of Police with enforcement powers to require trucks carrying hazardous materials to travel  Interstate 270 and to clarify the list of prohibited routes and the western boundary of the downtown area for the purpose of hazardous material transportation.  The amendment will also increase fines for drivers who are disobeying hazardous materials transportation law and require a mandatory court appearance for those putting the public at risk.

 

MAKING GOVERNMENT MORE EFFICIENT:  In an ongoing effort to make City government more efficient, save taxpayer dollars and help protect the environment, Administration Committee Chair A. Troy Miller is sponsoring ordinance 2049-2011 to authorize the expenditure of $20,136.00 from the General Permanent Improvement Fund for the purchase of tablet computers, accessories and software as part of the City’s eCouncil initiative.  Each week, the City Clerk’s Office produces over 4,000 pages of printed materials for Councilmembers to review legislation.  The purchase of these technology components will allow Council to significantly reduce the costs and dependence on resources associated with production of printed materials associated with the legislative process, improve office efficiency and maximize taxpayer dollars by paying for itself within 1 ½ years.

 

HONORING THE COLUMBUS METROPOLITAN LIBRARY: The Columbus Metropolitan Library has been serving residents of central Ohio for more than 125 years.  The library lends over seventeen million items and assists over eight million visitors each year. Councilmember Eileen Y. Paley will be introducing resolution 0311X-2011 to honor the Columbus Metropolitan Library for receiving the 2011 National Medal for Community Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.  The library was specifically recognized and honored for its Homework Help Centers, Ready to Read Corps and Job Help Centers.  The award is considered the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries and follows numerous past honors including the Library of the Year Award in 2010, a #1 Hennen Ranking and Library Journal’s Five-Star Rating in 2009 and 2010.  The Columbus Metropolitan Library is the only library in the nation to receive all of these top awards.  

 

IMPROVING CITY BUILDINGS:  Finance Committee Chair Priscilla R. Tyson is sponsoring ordinance 1885-2011 to authorize the expenditure of $20,750.00 for the replacement of chilled water coils in the west side air handler at the Jerry Hammond Center, 1111 East Broad Street.  The work will include the disconnection of the insulation and piping coils, proper removal and disposal of coils, installation of three water coils and re-attached piping andre-insulate coils.  The facility houses the city’s Recreation and Parks and Technology Departments as well as the Community Relations Commission and the Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation (COWIC).   

 

RECOGNIZING NATIONAL HEALTH MONTH:  Preventive health care and healthy lifestyle choices can help prevent many avoidable illnesses and diseases.  The Ohio State University Medical Center is dedicated to the adoption of health care that is predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory (P4 Medicine).  Health, Housing & Human Services Committee Chair Hearcel F. Craig is sponsoring resolution 0320X-2011 to recognize the month of November 2011 as National Health Month and The Ohio State University for its leadership in promoting healthy lifestyle choices and preventive health care. P4 Medicine strives to adopt strategies that will transform health care so that it costs less, provides higher quality outcomes and yields better patient satisfaction.  Dr. Steven G. Gabbe, MD, Chief Executive Officer for The Ohio State University Medical Center will be attending to accept the resolution.

City Council Expands eCouncil Initiative

(Columbus)--Columbus City Council continues to improve the way it does business, save taxpayer dollars and help protect the environment by spearheading efforts to move to a more paperless legislative process. Councilmember A. Troy Miller is sponsoring ordinance 2049-2011, which allows for the purchase of tablet computers and other related items and software, as part of the City’s eCouncil initiative.

“On a typical week, the City Clerk’s Office produces more than 4,000 pages of printed materials to support Councilmember’s review and assessment of legislative matters,” said Councilmember Miller. “The move to electronic distribution of these materials will significantly reduce the reliance on printed materials, while allowing staff to work in a more productive, positive business-transformation, manner.”

A number of city councils across the country have transitioned to electronic tablet distribution and review of legislation materials. An extensive study of the processes and procedures of these offices was conducted to develop a plan for Columbus. It is estimated that the real dollar savings of more than $20,000 resulting from the move to electronic distribution will surpass the cost of the project in approximately one year. Further cost savings will be realized from more than nine staff hours freed-up per week as a result of electronic distribution, and as additional office supplies and equipment, such as calendars, digital cameras and some desktop computers, transition to the tablet computers.

This project is part of the larger eCouncil initiative, which is being designed to provide more information to more people at lower costs to taxpayers. Earlier this year, Council announced the pending launch of its enhanced legislative website that allows residents to read and review archived ordinances and those current being considered by Council. Future enhancements include the ability for website users to view on-demand video of the reading, discussion and vote by Councilmember of specific legislation.
