Family of W. Carlton Weddington

“On behalf of the members and staff of the Columbus City Council, I wish to express our condolences to Representative W. Carlton Weddington and his family on the loss of his mother, Mrs. R. Carline Weddington.  Mrs. Weddington was a long time member of the Columbus community and extremely active in social and philanthropic organizations.  Her sense of service and love for Columbus is an example to all how one person can indeed impact the lives of others through selfless devotion to family and community. An excellent editorial!

An excellent and well-reasoned editorial responding to many of the criticisms being leveled at passenger rail projects.  This is big-time eloquence from a small town paper in Wisconsin, and could very well be an answer to what we are reading and hearing here in Ohio.  Credit for catching this goes to Kevin Brubaker at the ELPC.

Enjoy and feel free to pass around..... KJP

Republicans should get on board with high-speed rail

No political party is all-everything.....

Milwaukee Biz Blog
Wisconsin Republicans should get on board with high-speed rail

http://www.biztimes.com/blogs/milwaukee-biz-blog/2010/8/26/wisconsin-republicans-should-get-on-board-with-high-speed-rail
By Ralph Munro

Editor's note: Ralph Munro, the long-time Republican secretary of state for the state of Washington, has been monitoring the debate at BizTimes.com about high-speed rail in Wisconsin. Munro decided, along with three other Republican officials in the state of Washington, to write the following entry for the Milwaukee Biz Blog. Note, Munro has performed some consulting work for Talgo Inc., the Spanish company that will build high-speed railcars in Milwaukee.

Wisconsin Republicans opposed to higher-speed rail might want to take a second look. We are four GOP elected officials who worked together to bring Talgo and higher-speed rail to the Vancouver (British Columbia)-Seattle- Portland corridor with remarkable results.

Like Wisconsin, Washington and other states find themselves forced to make hard choices when spending tight public funds. Not only does everyone want government to do more with less, it is also vital to get the best results for the money spent.

So, why are Wisconsin's GOP gubernatorial candidates lining up in favor of road spending only and against resource-efficient passenger trains?

City Councilmember Hearcel F. Craig participates in the “Ties that Bind” Ceremony at Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys

Columbus City Councilmember Hearcel F. Craig joined Columbus City Schools Superintendent/CEO, Gene T. Harris, Ph.D., city officials and area community leaders in welcoming the inaugural class of the Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys during the “Ties that Bind” tie-tying ceremony this morning.

The expectation of “Excellence” at Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys begins with building a sense of community. The “Ties that Bind” tie-tying ceremony is a symbolic induction for scholars into the school community. The wearing of a City Prep for Boys tie connects the scholars to the ideas of unity, brotherhood and school pride.

Community leaders taking part in assisting this inaugural class in tying their uniform ties include The Ohio State University’s Athletic Director Gene Smith, President of 100 Black Men of Columbus, John M. Jackson, and Senior Vice President and Assistant Publisher for the Columbus Post, Darryl Lee.

Each year young scholars will begin their journey with this important ceremony. This year’s inaugural class will have the responsibility of assisting the class of 2011-2012 scholars in tying their ties.

Council President Michael C. Mentel comments on the passing of former Council President Jerry Hammond, Sr.

“Jerry Hammond was a devoted public servant, a mentor and leader who deeply cared about Columbus.  He served on Columbus City Council from 1974-1990 and became the first African American Council President in 1984.  During his years on City Council he instituted many programs that improved neighborhoods and the business climate in our city. He worked to give citizens a much stronger voice in local government and created the Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization (NCR) program, a small business loan program.  In fact, much of the economic development in places like the Short North can be directly tied to the NCR program.  The Jerry Hammond Center along East Broad Street, now home to many Columbus City departments, is a fitting tribute to a man whose contributions to our community will never be forgotten.”

New Chief Academic Officer Welcomes New School Year
With the first day of school just days away, Columbus City Schools Chief Academic Officer Keith M. Bell is advising parents to continue guiding kids back into their regular routines in preparation for the new academic year and to initiate discussions about the importance of a child's school career. Similarly, Bell said he is eagerly welcoming the new school year also. "This is an opportunity that will allow me to focus on the educational performance of the district while developing policies and procedures to close academic achievement gaps," said Bell.
Bell began his work with the district, August 2, 2010. As chief academic officer, Bell is directly responsible to the superintendent and has primary authority and accountability for the district's academic support services as well as the academic performance of all schools.

New State Vaccination Requirements!
Keep your child from having to be excluded from school!
The Ohio Department of Health is now requiring that prior to the start of kindergarten, all children must receive a second dose of varicella (chicken pox) vaccine, and the last dose of polio vaccine must be on or after the child's fourth birthday. Additionally, students entering 7th grade need a booster dose of the Tdap vaccine. District health officials are encouraging families to take advantage of the Columbus Public Health Department's free vaccination clinics. Failure to provide vaccine documentation to the school nurse by September 15 will require children to remain at home until the immunization requirements are met.

Families Can Access Bus Route Info by Home Address Online
At this point, all parents should have received in the mail a "snap-pull" envelope with each child's transportation information, i.e. bus pick-up and drop-off times and locations. This new method allowed the district to send families the most up-to-date information. Families may also look-up their students' route information on the district's website www.columbus.k12.oh.us and clicking the "Transportation" button. A school transportation FAQ is also available on the site. For more information, click here to visit the CCS Transportation webpage.

Change in Columbus High School Bus Stops: Maps and Information
One of Columbus City Schools' levy promises to the community was to conduct a comprehensive review of the transportation operation to help improve efficiency and operations and to reduce costs. However, at the forefront of any Columbus City School decision is to maintain the safety of our students in all situations. For the upcoming 2010-2011 school year, the district will consolidate high school (only) bus stops to the nearest open CCS building from the student's home. Click here to learn more.

Kindergarten Orientation: August 25-27, 2010

1.       Pool News

In an effort to expedite the completion of the repair work in the RPAC Recreation Natatorium and to ensure work is complete before the start of the school year, the Leisure Pool will close on Wednesday, August 25.  The Lap Pool will also remain closed during this time as work is      completed to comply with the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Act that requires the upgrade     of pool drains.

The Class Pool, the Competition Pool and the Leisure Spa will remain open during Aquatic                         Center hours.  Please see the Rec Swim Schedule for details.

2.       RPAC Locker Lottery

A locker lottery system is currently in place for those wishing to reserve a locker in the men's or women's locker rooms. Current locker holders do not need to participate in the locker lottery unless they wish to upgrade or downgrade their locker size.  Any active member may submit their name during the times listed below by visiting www.recsports.osu.edu.  Each member chosen for a locker will have a week to claim and pay for their locker at the RPAC Sport Shop.  After this time, all remaining lockers will be available for rent on a first come first served basis.  Current locker holders are not impacted by this change.

4.       Summer Maintenance continues…

Beginning Monday, August 23, the basketball courts at the Adventure Recreation Center (ARC) will be closed for maintenance.  During this time we will be repairing, repainting, and refinishing the floor.  Currently, the courts are set to re-open Monday, September 5.  During this closure, please visit the RPAC and Jesse Owens South for your indoor basketball needs. The turf fields and fitness         areas will remain open during this time. We appreciate your understanding in advance!
