Are you receiving a pass-along copy of CCS eNews? | Linden-McKinley Dedication Set for September 17  Mark your calendar for the rededication of Linden-McKinley STEM Academy on September 17, at 6:30 p.m. the school is located at 1320 Duxberry Ave. We invite parents, students, alumni and members of the community to tour the renovated building and meet with district representatives and school building staff. Originally opened in 1928 as Linden-McKinley High School, the updated facility includes new science labs, updated technology, a rooftop garden, and other amenities designed to meet the needs of today's students. Student Art on Display at Rhodes State Office Tower Artwork by Fort Hayes Arts and Academics High School students Derrick Callender, Samiraite Tsige, Shannon Conwell and Emoni Hampton will be featured with the work of three professional artists at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower Main Lobby Gallery from Sept. 4 - 29, 2012. The exhibit, "Marching Forward with History - Wisdom - Faith," studies the historical east side African American community who lived in the Mt. Vernon Avenue - East Long Street area from the 1920's through the 1970's.  Visit your Neighborhood School - District-Wide Open House Events begin Next Week Parents and the community are invited to visit their local neighborhood school during the upcoming School Open House events. High school events are the week of Sept. 11, with middle school and elementary school events the following weeks. Visit the District Website to see a complete list of Open House dates and times. West High School Teacher Among Food Science Elite West High School teacher Karen Nuce was one of just 40 teachers nationwide chosen to participate in a food science workshop developed and implemented in a partnership between the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), and Graduate School USA. Nuce learned firsthand about the development and spread of food-borne illnesses, the vulnerability of at-risk populations, and the science behind safe food handling, storage and preparation. In addition, she talked with FDA scientists and conducted laboratory experiments at the University of Maryland to further increase her understanding of food science. The one-week workshop took place in Washington, D.C., during summer break.  4th Annual Step Up With Kids Run/Walk Communities in Schools (CIS) is the nation's leading community-based drop-out prevention organization. Their mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. You can help support CIS at their fourth annual Step Up With Kids 5K/1 Mile Run/Walk September 15, beginning at 9 a.m. The event begins at Genoa Park and travels through the downtown area. For more details, and to register, visit PremierRaces.com  Students Learn About Future Opportunities at 33rd Annual Columbus Kiwanis College FairRepresentatives from more than 165 colleges, universities and campus groups will be available for students at the 33rd Annual Columbus Kiwanis College Fair. This event is co-sponsored by the Columbus City Schools and I Know I Can. Students, parents and the community are welcome to attend this free event on Monday, Sept. 17, at Veterans Memorial, 300 W. Broad St. Two convenient sessions are available, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and again from 6 - 8 p.m. In addition to information about the schools, attendees can also learn about how to pay for college through scholarships grants and loans and learn ways to get the most out of their on-campus visits. Superintendent's Honors and Recognition Program Several times throughout the school year, Superintendent/CEO Gene T. Harris, Ph.D., and the Columbus Board of Education celebrate the exceptional work of Columbus City Schools students, staff and members of the community during the Superintendent's Honor and Recognition program.
