House rejects slashing Amtrak FY11 funding

House rejects slashing Amtrak FY11 funding
Thursday, February 17, 2011

The House of Representatatives Thursday approved cuts of various sizes for various government programs, but rejected a proposal to cut $446.9 million in Amtrak funding for the current fiscal year 2011.

Seeking to cut $61 billion from the current fiscal year budget, the House approved cuts affecting the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), school improvement funds, and the U.S. Institute for Peace.

The vote rejecting the Amrak cuts reportedly was 250-176, indicating more Republican House support for the nation's passenger railroad network than many observers anticipated.

Councilmember Michelle M. Mills Inspects New Columbus Fire Medics

Columbus safety forces are some of the best trained and equipped in the nation and now, thanks to the investment of a little more than $2-million capital budget dollars, there are nine new medic units in service at fire stations around the city to protect Columbus residents.   City Councilmember Michelle M. Mills, the chair of the Public Safety committee, toured Fire Station 17 in the Hilltop neighborhood to see firsthand one of the medics and thank the fire personnel who will operate the vehicle in case of emergency.

“Having highly qualified firefighters is one thing, but it is equally important to have the most up to date equipment possible when they respond to an emergency call,” said Councilmember Mills.  “These new medics join an ever improving fleet of fire equipment serving in Columbus neighborhoods.”

In addition to the new medic at Station 17, eight other units were placed into service last week around Columbus.   The new medics have been assigned to:

  • Station 4-3030 Winchester Pike
  • Station 6-5750 Maple Canyon Avenue
  • Station 11-2200 West Case
  • Station 12-3200 Sullivant Avenue
  • Station 14-1514 Parsons Avenue
  • Station 15-1800 East Livingston Avenue
  • Station 17-2250 West Broad Street
  • Station 22-3069 Parsons Avenue
  • Station 23-4451 East Livingston Avenue

“The purchase of these new medics ensures that the city continues to invest millions in new equipment every year,” said Councilmember Mills.  “The city has invested more than $22.2 million in the last four years in vehicles for the Fire Division – 31 Medics, 22 Engines, five Ladders, one Air Supply Unit, and seven Battalion Chief Units and finally one Bomb Squad Auxiliary unit.  The City of Columbus has done an excellent job in investing in emergency equipment and our residents are the ones who will benefit from responsible replacement program.”

Councilmember Mills is sponsoring other significant amendments to the 2011 capital budget.   One piece deals with paying for proposed security cameras in five Columbus neighborhoods.  The pilot project is expected to move forward this year in the Hilltop, Livingston Avenue, Mount Vernon, We inland Park and Linden neighborhoods and provide an additional level of safety and security; acting as a deterrent criminal activity, helping police solve crimes and ultimately to hold those responsible who commit crimes.

Another capital budget proposal will help build a new crime lab for the city’s already nationally accredited staff.  This building, that will house the crime lab and property room, will allow technicians to use the most high tech possible equipment to solve crimes in the shortest amount of time possible.  Meaning officers can close more cases, quicker, bringing closure to families impacted by crime.  Safety leaders are entering into the design phase of the construction process with completion of the facility slated for as early as late 2013.

Last Monday during the City Council meeting, Councilmember Mills sponsored legislation to purchase $200,000 worth of early warning sirens for Columbus neighborhoods.   The location of the 10 sirens will be chosen after careful consultation with the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency.   Councilmember Mills is sponsoring a capital budget amendment to buy more warning sirens in the future.  These sirens can be placed in new locations or can be used to replace worn out equipment.

Streetcar backers prepare 'round two'
By Barry M. Horstman, 8:09 PM, Feb. 16, 2011

Calling the task ahead "round two" - an annoying reality in that he thought round one had ended in a knockout win for his side - Rob Richardson vowed before an enthusiastic Over-the-Rhine audience Wednesday night to "beat them again" so Cincinnati can move forward with its $128 million-plus streetcar plan.

At a historic Over-the-Rhine bar only blocks from the streetcar's route, Richardson and more than 200 supporters eagerly climbed back into the ring to again take on opponents doggedly trying to derail an ambitious plan alternately hailed as a linchpin of Cincinnati's future and decried as an ill-timed waste of money.

Councilmember Zachary M. Klein Tours Columbus Recreation Center

For decades, the Woodward Park Recreation Center in the Northland neighborhood has been a cool place for families to take part in numerous activities in a safe, fun filled environment.   Soon, with the investment of capital dollars by the City of Columbus, the recreation center will truly be a cool place.  That is because the building is about to receive something it has never had before, air conditioning.

“The improvements we are making at Woodward Park and the Far East Recreation Centers will allow Columbus residents to enjoy their facilities year-round,” said Councilmember Zachary M. Klein, chair of the Recreation and Parks Committee.  “Our investment in air conditioning will allow Columbus residents to take advantage of expanded programming, improve their overall health, and provide a great place for young people and seniors to beat the summer heat.”

Councilmember Klein is exploring funding options that will allow the Recreation and Parks Department to install HVAC systems in other recreation centers around the city.    It is one of his top capital budget priorities he is asking his colleagues to support as the capital budget process moves forward.  In addition to improving area recreation centers, he is also including dollars for swimming pool upgrades and new playground accessories that will allow children of all abilities to enjoy outdoor play.  Councilmembers are expected to approve a capital budget and associated capital improvement plan in mid-march.

Thursday, Councilmember Michelle M. Mills, chair of the Public Safety and Judiciary Committee, will highlight her many safety related capital budget amendments and showcase new medic vehicles the city has just put in service, equipment paid for with capital funds.   Councilmember Mills will be at the Columbus Division of Fire Station 17, 2300 West Broad in the Hilltop neighborhood, 1:30 pm.

Florida governor rejects HSR - California next target

Another governor in a presidential swing state rejects Obama's HSR money using false arguments motivated by politics, ideology and fear. Next, this coordinated, strategic attack by hard-line conservatives (Reason Foundation, Heritage, Cato, etc) will focus on killing California's HSR program. America has no transportation infrastructure reinvestment tools to grow America out of the recession. In an era of peak oil and rising fuel prices, highway and aviation will not be able to lead us out....

Florida governor rejects US high-speed rail funds
Wed Feb 16, 2011 10:27am EST

Feb 16 (Reuters) - Florida's Tea Party movement-backed Governor Rick Scott on Wednesday said he was rejecting federal funds to construct a high-speed railway project in the state.

"Government cannot spend more than it takes in," the Republican governor said.

Scott spoke at a news conference in the state capital, where he strongly criticized the budget proposal for 2012 unveiled on Monday by President Barack Obama and said federal grants earmarked for Florida to begin work on a high-speed rail link between Tampa and Orlando would be rejected.
