WORLD LEADERS LEARN FROM COLUMBUS

REFORMS AND EFFICIENCIES

(Columbus)—The City of Columbus has long been recognized as a national leader in innovation in local government.   From financial reform packages that are reducing the cost of government to expanding green technologies designed to conserve valuable natural resources, Columbus is inspiring communities around the nation to become efficient.   Now that story of success is being told to a global audience.

Columbus City Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson, Chair of the City Council Finance Committee, recently joined colleagues from across the country at the World Conference of Mayors’ annual conference in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, Africa. Councilmember Tyson gave a presentation on Columbus’ nationally recognized commitment to green energy and sustainability policy.  Her presentation was attended by mayors and legislators from across the United States and the African continent. She highlighted the City’s construction of a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station, acquisition of CNG vehicles, and installation of geothermal underground water wells and solar panel systems at city facilities.

“Columbus has a national reputation for sound management and responsible governance,” said Councilmember Tyson. “It is my honor to share our story nationally and internationally so that other communities can benefit from our experience and success.”

Councilmember Tyson spoke during a forum on mining, energy, and the environment. Other forum topics at the five-day conference included municipal development, eco-tourism and cultural arts, healthcare, and education.

“America’s cities are embracing innovation in crucial areas like development, healthcare, and the arts,” said Councilmember Tyson. “My goal when I meet with leaders from other cities is to share what is working here and bring back to Columbus ideas that are working elsewhere.”

Councilmember Tyson represents Columbus as the vice chair of the National League of Cities’ Community and Economic Development Steering Committee and a board member of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected officials.
