Councilmember Priscilla Tyson Applauds Success of Hire1000
Columbus City Councilmember Priscilla Tyson, chair of the Finance Committee, applauded the success of the Hire1000 initiative, a joint venture between the City of Columbus, the Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation (COWIC), and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. The initiative placed more than 1,200 people in jobs, exceeding its goal of 1,000.
“The number one priority for Columbus City Council is job creation,” said Councilmember Tyson. “When people are at work, families are at work. I want to congratulate Mayor Michael B. Coleman, COWIC Executive Director Suzanne Coleman-Tolbert, Michael Dalby and his team at the chamber, and the community partners who worked so hard to make Hire1000 a success.”
The Hire1000 initiative was launched in September of 2011 and continued throughout the fall with job fairs in various neighborhoods around the city. Seventy-nine employers participated in the effort.
Tyson noted that Columbus City Council supports COWIC’s ongoing effort to help Columbus residents find work. For instance, the city funds COWIC’s summer youth program, which connects young people in our community with jobs and internships.
“Central Ohio’s unemployment rate has fallen below seven percent for the first time since 2008,” Tyson added. “Columbus City Council is proud to help connect unemployed residents with the companies who need their talents.”
