Our goal for 2012 is a 90 percent graduation rate. During the week of March 12, district tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students will take the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT). Students in grades 3 -8 will take the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) in April. This is an important time of year for students and the district. Superintendent/CEO Gene T. Harris, Ph.D., is encouraging all parents, guardians and family members to support their students as they prepare for these exams, encourage them to get plenty of rest, eat properly and be ready to give their best effort. Dominion MS Students Earn Honors in Power of the Pen Competition Twelve Dominion Middle School student writers were among the 250 from more than 22 schools in four counties at the district Power of the Pen Competition held at New Albany Middle School on Jan. 28. Dominion seventh-grader Abigail Partridge placed first among all seventh-graders for the day. Abby also received a Best of Round award for seventh grade, while Dominion's Sophia Rizzi was awarded Best of Round for eighth grade. Hazel Goodburn placed 13th and Sophia 17th overall for eighth grade. Columbus City Schools Website Earns award for Transparency The Sunshine Review, a national nonprofit dedicated to government transparency, named the CCS website among the 2012 Sunny Award winners. Sunshine Review evaluated more than 6,000 websites with just 214 earning an "A" for proactively disclosing information to the public. Read more... Eastmoor Academy HS Student Named Violet Richardson Awardee The Soroptimist International (SI) Columbus and Franklin County Chapter recently named Courtney Avon as the Violet Richardson Award winner. Soroptimist International is a service organization that focuses on issues affecting women. Avon, a tenth grade student at Eastmoor Academy High School, was recognized for her leadership role with the Impact Team at her school. She helped initiate such projects as the homeless camp where students spent the night in makeshift shelters to simulate the conditions many homeless face. The Violet Richardson Award comes with a monetary gift of $400 which is split between Avon and the group she represents. Students Publish "The Somali Journey...As Seen through The Eyes of Children" Students at Mifflin High School have published a book titled "The Somali Journey...As Seen Through The Eyes of Children." The book is a collection of writing and photo essays by Mifflin Somali students and theater teacher Todd Adam Decker-Kaplonski. The stories detail coming to America, being a Muslim in CCS, as well as monologues and a short play. The students' goal is to further the understanding of the Somali population in Columbus. To purchase copy, contact Mr. Decker-Kaplonski at Mifflin HS, 3245 Oak Spring St. Books are $25, plus $5 for shipping. 2012-13 Year-round School Calendar Set Students at the CCS year-round schools will report for class July 24.
