IMPROVING FAIRWOOD AVENUE: Public Service & Transportation Committee Chair Eileen Y. Paley is sponsoring ordinance 0879-2012 to authorize the expenditure of $3,759,983.61 for the Arterial Street Rehabilitation – Fairwood Avenue/Watkins Road-Koebel Road project. The project includes the reconstruction of Fairwood Avenue from Watkins Road to Koebel Road, the installation of 6,125 feet 5-foot wide sidewalks on both sides of the street, 24 ADA wheelchair ramps, and approximately 3,500 feet of storm sewer improvements. The storm sewer improvements will be constructed south along Fairwood Avenue from Watkins Road to Southfield Drive and west along Southfield Drive from Fairwood to Woodway Drive. There is one bus transit route within the limits of this project. Pedestrian generators and destinations impacting the proposed project include residents walking to the bus stops, school children walking to or coming from Marion Franklin High School, Watkins Elementary School and Beery Elementary School. The project is a combined effort between the Department of Public Service and the Department of Public Utilities.
FINANCE COMMITTEE Public Hearing: Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson, chair of the Finance Committee, will host a public hearing on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers to review the city’s first quarter finances. Finance Director Paul Rakosky will present a report on the First Quarter Financial Review. Those who wish to address City Council are welcome to submit a speaker slip at City Hall on the day of the meeting.
ZOO DAYS AT CITY COUNCIL: Some furry friends from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will visit Council Chambers to help promote the 2012 Melvin B. Dodge Summer Zoo Days. The program between the City and the Zoo is named in honor of the former director of the Recreation and Parks Department. Ordinance 0774-2012, sponsored by Recreation and Parks Committee Chair Zachary M. Klein, will help approximately 2,000 area children involved in programs at Columbus Recreation Centers enjoy Zoo Days this summer. The Columbus Zoological Park Association will provide in-kind services in the amount of $18,500 to be used toward transportation, backpacks, novelties and admission for children in 2012.
HONORING ARMED FORCES DAY: Members of our Armed Forces have been instrumental to the preservation of the freedom, security, and prosperity enjoyed by the people of the United States. Each year, on the third Saturday in May, Armed Forces Day is celebrated with parades, open houses, receptions, and air shows around the Nation to honor those who serve in the name of democracy. Veterans Committee Chair Hearcel F. Craig is sponsoring resolution 0099X-2012 to honor and recognize Armed Forces Day in Columbus. Armed Forces Day was established on August 31, 1949, following the consolidation of the military services of the United States into the Department of Defense.
RACE FOR THE CURE: Thousands of people will soon take to Columbus streets to battle breast cancer at the 2012 Komen Columbus Race for the Cure on Saturday, May 19th. City Council President Andrew J. Ginther is sponsoring resolution 0098X-2012 to honor the thousands of runners, walkers and volunteers who will be giving their time and money to find a cure. The 20th annual event has grown from 875 participants to more than 50,000 walkers and runners, making it the largest 5K road race in Ohio and the second largest Komen Race in the United States. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 40-59.
