COUNCILMEMBER HEARCEL F. CRAIG ENCOURAGES HEALTHY EATING HABITS THROUGH THE 2011 SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM
(Columbus)—As the school year ends and students begin their summer vacations, many working parents are struggling with ways to ensure their child continues to eat healthy meals during the summer break. City Councilmember Hearcel F. Craig, chair of the Health, Housing & Human Service Committee, is reminding parents that healthy eating habits can be maintained through the Summer Food Service Program offered by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department.
The annual program provides breakfast, lunch and snacks for children ages 1-18 at recreation centers, community centers and various agencies throughout the Central Ohio community. The program is federally funded and the majority of the sites are located in income qualifying neighborhoods.
“For the past 30 years, the City of Columbus has been a part of this remarkable program to help ensure that all children maintain healthy eating habits,” said Craig. “We are the largest sponsor of the Summer Food Service Program in the State of Ohio and each year we reaffirm our commitment by operating over 200 locations for children to receive healthy meals.”
The program begins on June 6th and runs through August 19th. Meals will be provided by the Columbus City Schools food service at all locations. In 2010, the program provided over 400,000 free meals at over 200 sites.
