We want to hear from you. |  Summer Graduation Ceremony This WeekendMore than 100 Columbus City Schools seniors will participate in a summer commencement ceremony Saturday, August 18, to be held at Veteran's Memorial, 9:30 a.m. Gene T. Harris, Ph.D., Superintendent/CEO will deliver the keynote address. The students have worked diligently all summer to fulfill graduation requirements, and will receive their diploma during the Saturday ceremony in recognition of their academic achievements in the presence of family, friends, faculty and staff, alumni, and board members. First Day of School, 4 New/Renovated Buildings Open August 22  More than 50,000 students are expected to begin classes at 115 Columbus City Schools on Wednesday, August 22. Three district schools on the Year-Round calendar – Columbus Africentric, Woodcrest Elementary and Weinland Park Elementary – began school July 25. Students at Georgian Heights Alternative, Liberty, and Olde Orchard Alternative Elementary Schools will be attending school in brand new buildings while students at Clinton Elementary will return to a totally renovated space. Students at the Columbus International High School and three other schools will also be attending school in new locations. Click here for all the details. Back to School – Stay in School Parent Conference August 18 The NAACP Columbus Branch invites all parents to the Back to School – Stay in School Parent Conference on Saturday, August 18, at Champion Middle School, 284 N. 22nd St., from 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Parents will learn tips to help unlock their child's potential. Million Father March Set for 1st Day of School  The Columbus Urban League is encouraging all fathers, and father-figures, to participate in the 2012 Million Father March, on August 22. This annual event is designed to encourage males to take an active role in the education and lives of their children. For more information, and to register, call 372-2344! Volunteers Needed for Tie-Tying Ceremony August 22 The Columbus City Preparatory Schools for Boys is seeking men to assist the school's students in the third annual "Ties That Bind" ceremony at the school, 3450 Medway Ave., from 8 – 8:45 a.m.. The purpose of the event is to help demonstrate how attitude is impacted by attire. To participate, call the school at 365-6166. Weinland Park ES Recognized in United Way Magazine  Weinland Park Elementary School is one of the three Columbus City Schools on a year-round schedules. Students in the year-round program attend the same number of days as their counter-parts on a traditional school-year calendar but their breaks are broken up differently and they have alternative options for course work during breaks. A recent issue of United Way of Central Ohio's Champion of Children magazinefeatured an article on the Weinland Park program from a parent and teacher perspective. Read the article here. Linden-McKinley Dedication Set for September 17  Mark your calendar for the rededication of Linden-McKinley STEM Academy on September 17, at 6:30 p.m. This event at the school, 1302 Duxberry Ave., invites parents, students, alumni and members of the community to tour the renovated building and meet with district and school building staff. Originally opened in 1928 as Linden-McKinley High School, the updated facility includes new science labs, updated technology, a rooftop garden, and other amenities designed to meet the needs of today's students.
