Midwest bullet train network to cost $83.6 billion, study says

Midwest bullet train network to cost $83.6 billion, study says
But the potential benefits from a 220-mph system are far greater than those from a cheaper one, report adds

By Jon Hilkevitch, Tribune reporter
8:34 p.m. CDT, April 27, 2011

A Midwest network of bullet trains that could travel at 220 mph and higher would cost $83.6 billion, but the benefits would be far greater than those from a less expensive system of trains topping out at 150 mph, according to a study to be released on Thursday.

The study, commissioned by the Midwest High Speed Rail Association and Siemens Corp., argues that going slower than 220 mph makes little sense, both in terms of construction costs and the ability to deliver passengers to their destinations quickly.

Building a passenger rail network topping out at 150 mph, which is still faster than the 110-mph maximum speed in the current high-speed rail plans for Illinois and nearby states, would cost $74.7 billion, according to the study, prepared by the Economic Development Research Group Inc. and AECOM, which designs transportation systems.

Richard's email and other things

Hi William,
How are you? It's been a while. How are you and Missy doing? I just wanted to check in real quick. I'd like to get Richard's email address if you have it handy. I thought I had saved it, but I can't find it. I want to see if he is interested in having a garden plot. Are you and Missy interested in having a plot? We have a few available so please do let me know. Any unused plots will be used for herbs and/or flowers until someone wants to occupy them.

We are building 2 or 3 new raised beds this year because the Creative Living people are so into it! It really is a lot of fun and very exciting to have such a commitment from them. I have had a little run-in with Steve Volkmann who wasn't happy about the mural, the bench, or the general "look" of the garden. He said it was just supposed to be something small scale and nice and it isn't. Of course, he saw it in November, so I'm not sure what garden looks good in November. In any case, we removed the mural and nixed the plan to build two wheelchair accessible picnic tables in the area. Steve said that he doesn't want the garden to be a gathering place. He is saying that because he is worried about vagrants and tailgaters hanging out in the space, but it was hard to swallow anyway. We cleaned up the compost bins and are making FULL use of the shed you have for us - thank goodness for that shed!!! I don't know where we would put all of those tomato stakes and fencing otherwise. We also have a tool box in the garden now.

Would you mind posting some things on the website under the garden for me? The email that I sent the other day has the rules and registration form (in one attachment) attached - could you please post those to the website? Could you also post something like:
It's time to grow veggies, flowers and fruit - are you ready? The NECKO Community Garden is kicking things into full swing on May 14th (rain date May 21st). Join us to plant veggies in the community plot. Interested in having your own plot? Read over the garden rules and email April Calkovsky, Garden Coordinator at garden@necko.org to discuss the options.

Let me know if there's anything you or Missy need. I'd love to have you guys involved in the garden this year :)

Garden Meeting and Update

Hello Gardeners,
I just wanted to check in with everyone. We have a garden meeting scheduled for tomorrow night, Wednesday, April 27th from 7:30-8:30pm at 1531 Perry St, the Creative Living lobby.

This meeting will be centered around decisions for planting things in the community plot over the next couple of weeks. The official "SAFE" date for any plant not able to withstand frost is May 14th. May 14th will be a work day for the garden, so if you are planning to participate this year, please plan to be at the garden sometime between 10am and 11am on Saturday May 14th. After this, our next garden work day will be June 11th.

I've attached the garden rules again, in case anyone missed the attachment sent out by Catherine Best two weeks ago. There have been a few changes this year, but these things are all for the good of the garden and our community. Please do take the time to read it and print out the last couple of pages, complete them, and get them to me by June 11th. My address is below for mailing, but you may also bring the documents to a garden work day on May 14th or June 11th.

If you are planning to have an individual plot, please send your documents along with the $30 fee (remember, $20 of it is REFUNDABLE). Fees cover expenses related to water, soil, and labor to till the plot. We tilled all plots and added amendments on April 16th, so your plot is ready to grow great things! I'll have an update next week about what plants we will have available, but it will be limited. Please do secure your own seeds for direct sow veggies.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Happy Gardening!

Klein will be joined by Derek Dorsett of the Columbus Blue Jackets this evening to present resolution 0058X-2011 to members of the Northeast Storm High School Hockey Team for winning the Ohio State High School Hockey Championship and for being the first team in Ohio history to reach the Quarterfinals of the USA Hockey National High School Tournament.  The championship was held in Chicago, Illinois, March 23 – 27, 2011.

Fw: NEED IMMEDIATE HELP: Progressive Railroading TSW On-Line Survey

All:

Sorry for all the e-mails, but Progressive Railroading is conducting an on-line poll on the question of allowing states to increase truck weights from 80,000 lbs. to 97,000 lbs.  This poll isn't scientific, but the National Industrial Transportation League (NITL), a vocal supporter of heavier trucks, has notified its membership to vote in support of the heavy truck proposal by voting in this PR poll.  I am asking you to also vote in the poll, but to DISAGREE with the proposition.  The link to the poll is included below.

Voting is at http://www.progressiverailroading.com/

Please vote by the end of the day Monday April 25. Thanks!

GE Transportation's economic impact

As you may know, General Electric has a large plant in Erie, PA that makes locomotives for freight and passenger railroads in the U.S. and worldwide, with suppliers in the surrounding hinterlands (including Ohio). Yesterday, GE issued a release highlighting the importance of GE Transportation to Pennsylvania's economy. There are links below to their release and the study they commissioned. If you have trouble with the links, I can send you pdfs of the release and/or report. The text immediately below this note is from the cover note that GE's Don Itzkoff sent to the OneRail Coalition yesterday (bolding is mine). KJP

___________

Key findings of the report are:

·         GE Transportation supports one in 11 jobs in Erie County.

·         Every GE job supports close to three additional jobs in Pennsylvania.

·         GE's total economic impact is $2.7 billion on Erie County and $4.6 billion on the entire state.

·         The company generates one dollar in every $130 in the state's economy.

·         GE employees' impact on the local area, both through their financial donations and thousands of hours of volunteerism, is estimated to be in excess of $19.6 million annually.

Put another way, GE Transportation's annual economic impact on Pennsylvania is larger than all Pennsylvania-based professional sports teams ($1.37 billion) and the state's mining, oil and gas extraction industries ($1.79 billion) combined.

The study highlights the importance of the rail sector to our economy, and how increasing investment in rail infrastructure and equipment generates jobs.

In 2010 GE Transportation commissioned Tripp Umbach a Pittsburgh-based independent research firm, to conduct an economic impact study.  The report, "Powering Pennsylvania: GE Transportation's Impact on the Economy and Community-at-Large in Northwestern Pennsylvania," was released in April 2011.

Key findings of the report include:

· GE Transportation supports one in 11 jobs in Erie County.
